Do you have what it takes?

What are some of the qualities successful BI experts at Aptera have in common?

It’s kind of obvious, but the main quality is a desire to help businesses be successful. One of our recent projects actually got someone promoted, and we all really got a kick out of that. In addition to being technically proficient, you also really have to be able to thrive in front of an audience. We work really closely with our clients, so the social aspect is huge. In general, you have to have the mindset where you’re always looking for ways to improve efficiency or enhance performance. And if you model your life on Kimball Dimensional Theory that’s definitely a plus.

What do most people say are the best parts of working on the BI team at Aptera?

Getting out to see real businesses is a big one. You get to learn about all kinds of different businesses in a variety of industries. Plus, you find out pretty quick that we don’t hire people who can’t think for themselves. We have goals in mind, but we’re always open when it comes to figuring out the best way to get to them.

What types of technology would I be working with?

We work with the Microsoft BI stack: SQL Server, Integration Services, Analysis Services, Reporting Services, SharePoint, Excel, etc. It’s also important to note that we employ BI technologies in the context of Ralph Kimball’s Data Warehousing Theory.

What types of clients would I be working with?

A pretty wide variety. Again, that’s one of the reasons the job is enjoyable and stimulating. We generally use tools from the same toolbox, but we apply them in all kinds of different ways in all kinds of different business environments.

How is working with the BI team at Aptera different from working with BI at most other tech firms?

We really value everyone’s ideas here. For instance, we just did a review of a lot of our processes to see if there were any opportunities for streamlining or improvement, and we had everyone in the meeting, from new hires to experienced architects. The way we see it, everyone has had their own unique experiences, and everyone has something unique and valuable to offer. We don’t have a rigid, fixed-duty type of environment here. We’re a constantly evolving group. Plus, we work in partnerships that tend to be closer and longer-term than a lot of other companies. We don’t just drop solutions off at the client’s door and go on our way. We stick around to support the solutions, and that gives us a chance to see projects come to fruition. That can be really rewarding.

How might working at Aptera impact my future career as a BI expert?

I think this is really one of our strong points. We have a defined process where we help you identify your interests and strengths and then guide you into the role that will best suit you. And that includes what your goals are as far as advancement goes. Beyond that, you’ll get really invaluable experiences here because we don’t have fixed slots and assembly-line tasks. You’ll be dealing with a variety of business scenarios in all types of industries. You’ll come away with an impressive breadth of experience, and you’ll be used to diving right in to unfamiliar and complex situations. I don’t think you’ll ever find any of our people cowering in a corner after getting a look at a big project.

Does Aptera offer internship opportunities for aspiring BI developers?

Yep. We’ve designed it to give students a real-world foundation to build an understanding of the business on.
